Fuel Price Drop in Tanzania: A Welcome Relief for Motorists
Wednesday, September 3, 2025 | Arusha, Tanzania
Great news for motorists and businesses across Tanzania Mainland! The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has announced new cap prices for petroleum products, effective today, September 3, 2025, bringing a welcome drop in fuel costs. This is a significant development that will ease the financial burden on consumers and businesses that rely on transportation.
Key Price Changes
The new prices show a clear decline across the board for petrol, diesel, and kerosene. Here are the latest retail prices (in Tanzanian Shillings per litre) for the country's major port cities:
Dar es Salaam:
Petrol: TZS 2,807
Diesel: TZS 2,754
Kerosene: TZS 2,774
Tanga:
Petrol: TZS 2,868
Diesel: TZS 2,816
Kerosene: TZS 2,835
Mtwara:
Petrol: TZS 2,899
Diesel: TZS 2,847
Kerosene: TZS 2,866
Wholesale prices have also been adjusted downwards, which is expected to help retailers offer more competitive prices.
What's Driving the Price Drop?
EWURA has attributed this positive change to a combination of favorable global and local factors.
Falling Global Prices: The international market saw a decrease in Free-on-Board (FOB) prices. Specifically, FOB prices in the Arab Gulf market dropped by 0.2% for petrol, 5.5% for diesel, and 3.5% for kerosene.
A Stronger Shilling: The Tanzanian shilling has appreciated against the major foreign currencies used for fuel payments. The applicable exchange rate for September 2025 prices decreased by 3.96%, which helped lower the cost of imports.
Mixed Premium Trends: While shipping premiums at the Dar es Salaam Port increased, they decreased at the Tanga Port for petrol and diesel, and remained unchanged at Mtwara Port, contributing to the overall price reduction.
A Positive Outlook
This price adjustment is a clear relief for many, from everyday motorists to large-scale transportation and logistics companies. EWURA reminds all fuel stations to adhere strictly to the published cap prices and to display them on clearly visible boards. This move ensures fair competition and protects consumers from overcharging.
