About Geita Gold Mine (GGM
The Geita Gold Mine (GGM) is a prominent gold mining operation located in the Geita District of the Geita Region in northwestern Tanzania, within the Lake Victoria goldfields. Wholly owned by Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML), a subsidiary of AngloGold Ashanti, GGM is recognized as one of the most significant gold mines in East Africa. While large-scale operations commenced in 2000, gold mineralization was first discovered in the district in 1898, and formal mining has occurred in the area since the 1930s, with underground operations producing a million ounces between 1936 and 1966. Today, Geita utilizes a combination of open-pit and underground mining methods, with active pits like Nyamulilima and underground mines such as Star and Comet, Nyankanga, and Geita Hill contributing to its production. The mine's processing plant employs a carbon-in-leach method and has an annual capacity of 5.2 million tonnes of hard ore.
Beyond its substantial gold production, Geita Gold Mine plays a crucial role in Tanzania's economy and local community development. It is a major employer, with approximately 6,800 people, including contractors, working at the mine, of whom about 98% are Tanzanian nationals. Furthermore, GGM prioritizes local procurement, with a substantial portion of its spending directed towards Tanzanian businesses, demonstrating its commitment to empowering local economic growth.
