Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL) - More Context

Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL) is the largest producer of sugar in Tanzania, operating under the well-known "Bwana Sukari" brand name. It's a significant agro-industrial company and a key player in the Tanzanian economy.

Here's a breakdown of key aspects about Kilombero Sugar Company:

Ownership and Affiliation:

KSCL is part of the Illovo Sugar Africa Group, which is Africa's largest sugar producer with operations across six African countries (South Africa, Malawi, Mozambique, Eswatini, Zambia, and Tanzania).

Illovo Sugar Africa is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Associated British Foods plc (ABF), a company listed on the London Stock Exchange.

Illovo Sugar Africa holds a 75% shareholding in KSCL, while the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania holds the remaining 25%.

Location and Operations:

KSCL is located at Kidatu within the Kilombero Valley in Morogoro Region, Tanzania.

The company operates two agricultural estates and sugar mills: Msolwa and Ruembe, which are separated by the Great Ruaha River.
They have the largest sugarcane estate in Tanzania, covering 26,000 hectares. Of this, 10,000 hectares belong to KSCL, and approximately 16,000 hectares are cultivated by smallholder farmers known as "Kilombero Growers."

Production and Products:

Kilombero Sugar Company currently produces 126,000 tons of sugar per annum.

Their primary product is sugar, sold under the strong "Bwana Sukari" brand. This brand is ISO 9001:2015 certified and available in various pack sizes (50g, 150g, 320g, 1kg, 5kg, 25kg, and 50kg).
In addition to sugar, KSCL operates cohesively with Illovo Distillers Tanzania Limited (IDTL), which produces Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) from molasses, a byproduct of sugar production. Their current annual production capacity for ENA is 12,500 kilolitres, with plans to increase to +/-17,000 kilolitres after an expansion project.

Economic and Social Impact:

Largest Sugar Producer: KSCL contributes around 42% of Tanzania's national sugar production.
Significant Employer: The company supports a large number of jobs, both direct and indirect. It's estimated to support at least 4,440 jobs each season, with about 2,027 direct employees.

Support for Smallholder Farmers: Approximately 8,000 smallholder farmers (Kilombero Growers) supply about 600,000 tonnes of sugarcane annually, accounting for 45% of the company's cane supply. KSCL provides technical assistance, training, and facilitates access to financing for these growers.
Community Development: KSCL is actively involved in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities, investing in local schools, hospitals, and housing, benefiting thousands of people in the surrounding community. They also contribute to road infrastructure improvement to support cane transportation.
Contribution to National Economy: The company contributes significantly to the Tanzanian economy through taxes, dividends to the government (as a shareholder), and by stimulating other businesses in the Kilombero valley (e.g., transportation, hotels, shops).
Renewable Energy: Kilombero Sugar Company generates energy from bagasse (sugarcane residue), which is a source of clean renewable energy, meeting all the company's energy requirements.

Expansion Project:

In May 2021, KSCL shareholders approved a major Tsh 571.6 billion (US$ 238.5 million) sugar factory expansion project.

This expansion, expected to be completed in July 2024, aims to more than double the company's sugar processing capacity, increasing total production from 126,000 tons to 271,000 tons per year.
The expansion also includes increasing ethanol production and establishing 16,500 hectares of new cane area, which will significantly boost the number of growers supported (from 8,000 to 14,000-16,000).

This project aligns with the Tanzanian government's goal of achieving self-sufficiency in sugar production.
